This alarm is loud, even setting it half way on the volume, and the vibration is strong. Both of these are good things. However, even at the lowest brightness setting, the numbers still illuminates my room. I cut a piece of black cardstock and put it in front of the time. I don't check the time on it anyway, just use the alarm.

This is the THIRD type of bed shaker alarm I have ordered for my mom who lost hearing in one ear after a stroke, and FINALLY i now one for her that actually works!! Told mom 3rd one's a a charm! The shaker isn't really strong enough to put under the mattress like I was hoping for and I was a little skeptical of putting it in her pillowcase for 2 reasons - one, I was worried she would get tangled in the cord, and two, I was afraid it would slip out of the pillowcase. Well, I was able to 34;hide34; the cord under a large headboard pillow she keeps on her bed at all times, and was able to zip the shaker inside a zippered pillow protector case, so it's all good! It just arrived the other day so she hasn't had to use the alarm yet, but I am hoping it preforms well. The only other concern is how small the 34;alarm off34; button is - it's very tiny and in a line with the other buttons. We shall see, I'm just thrilled that it actually worked on the test!
