I removed the chain and mounted these on the side of a bird feeder with fender washers and screws. Seems to work well and door stays closed so far.

This is sturdy, easy to use, and the birds like it. I put store bought suet into it, and it's drawn woodpeckers, finches and more. (When the suet falls off, other birds eat the broken off bits.) The vinyl covered basket keeps it from rusting. Even when it gets tossed by the wind, it stays shut and stays on the chain. I'm very pleased with this purchase. I bought mine from the big blue box store.

After reading reviews-it said this one had a strong holding power-so far the birds are so enjoying just plain suet...if seeds in it squirrels will surely take all.I lost some before to them-wire it with a twisty on branch!I have lots of feeders in yard but this is very popular...made with heavy wire too. Try it-can't go wrong!

Suet seems secure in the feeder. Birds seem to like it so I would rate it as a good feeder.

Thankfully, nearly every brand of bird suet comes in identically-sized little bricks, so the basket you buy doesn't really matter in the slightest. Suet baskets seem bizarrely divisive in price point, with some coming in around the $2 range, and then nothing at all until you're spending $20 or $30 on a little metal cage that has laser-cut brass birds soldered to it and questioning your other decisions in life. At $5, you get a solidly built suet basket with a moderately strong chain, sure to delight all of the squirrels who scoop the fat out with their greedy little claws and frighten away all of the chickadees and titmice you thought you would be attracting. Plus it's a bit easier to fill than some of the cheaper suet baskets I've had in the past.

The C&S suet basket is your standard sort of basket. It's wire mesh that's covered with plastic and there are two clamps at the top to keep it closed... unless you've got raccoons ;]This basket comes with a very short chain with an open hook on the end which is supposed to be used to hang it; but which you'll want to ignore. The reason being that the chain isn't long enough or strong enough to keep the denizens of the wild at bay.Personally, I hang mine off of the bird feeder I have on the deck. I have a chain I run through the 'lid' and the rest of the cage at the top. I then hang the chain from the feeder. Reason #1 for doing this is that it frustrates the squirrels. (yay!) Those furry denizens will chew through rope and string and carry off the entire basket of goodies if you don't use metal. Reason #2 is that it slows raccoons down. The masked bandits will scoop out handfuls of tasty goodness, but they won't be able to open the cage, or break the lighter chain, and cart off the whole suet cake.Good basket. Could just have a better hanging system.Pam T~
