I love these things. As an avid geocacher I like to leave nice loot in any cache that has room for trade goods. A couple of years ago while looking for little compasses to incorporate into walking sticks I saw this listing for Small Elegant Pocket Compass. At first I thought the price was a bit outrageous, but that was before I realized the price was for a pack of 50! Wow. A very remarkable bargain. I've re-ordered a few times now and I must have given away hundreds of these things. For a short time they were not available, which was kind of freaking me out as I have heard from any number of geocachers what a kick the kids get out of finding these in the caches, and didn't want to let people down. Now they're back, so I ordered three boxes (a total of 150 of them). These things are solid but light weight. Out of the hundreds I've passed along I've only had one that was a dud. They're actually made of metal, probably tin, so they're impressive and accurate give the non-ferrous construction. The needle is well balanced and has a phosfur spot that glows nicely if you hit it with a flashlight on a night hike. The ring with degree markings is raised above the compass rose for a cool 3-D effect. Each one comes in it's own little baggie so they don't get dinged up. I'd doubt anyone is going to put one on a lanyard, but hey, the little ring thing above North is cool looking and sturdy enough that you could wear one around your neck if you wanted to. They really do work. Hell, I'm going to order up one more box of 50 just in case they get discontinued again.

Forget the name...should be "Really cheap simple compass that works with young students who know nothing about compasses". Can't be the price; great in the classroom. Forget using it outdoors.

I ordered up a batch of 50 of these to use as trade items in the game of geocaching. Frankly, I was prepared to get a box of total crap compasses. These turned out to be surprisingly sturdy and considerably bigger than expected. (About the size of a silver dollar) Also, each one is sealed in its own baggie, so I can carry several in my swag bag without them getting dinged up. The compass rose as well as the outer degree dial are crisply printed in a classic boyscout compass style. Would I try to orienteer through the Smokies with it? No. I have an expensive military lensatic compass for that kind of stuff. Are people (especially kids) tickled to find something this cool in a geocache? Yes, definitely. (And if you get right down to it, I bet I could use this thing along with a decent topo map to figure out where I am in a pinch.) I'll be ordering another batch of these when I start running low. I am very satisfied with the "bang for the buck" factor on this item, and the prompt delivery didn't hurt, either.Addendum: I'm now on my third batch of these things. I've looked around the internet but have not found a better quality compass for the money. At the time I purchased these they were a little less than $40 for 50 units. They're actually pretty darn accurate. I typically leave them as geocaching trade items. I recently conducted an intro to orienteering event in the Hoosier National forest. I made up around twenty laminated topo maps, and taped one of these (in the little baggies) to each map. Every participant was able to accurately hit the waypoints using the maps and these compasses. After this third batch is gone I'm sure I'll be getting a fourth. Thanks for a really decent product at a very reasonable price!

This item is perfect for my girlscout troop, for our hikes, and our overnights, and for locating coordinates for sky star gazing. The Compass was bigger and sturdier than I expected and it really works. Tip I learned: if the needle sticks on a compass just rub a drop of water over the glass top and it will eliminate any static that is causing the needle to stick. I would deffinately purchase this product again.

I bought sixteen of these for my classroom. They're great because they're accurate AND inexpensive. $0.99 each and the kids get some hands on learning about directions, magnets, maps, etc. I'm really happy with them.
