I am new to the world of birding. I began by using the Nat Geo Pocket Guide to the Birds of North America in conjunction with the eBird app to keep track of what birds I have seen. This field guide is beautiful and portable, but from a practical standpoint it is virtually useless. It's a give-and-take: I can easily fit this guide in my pocket and take it with me anywhere, unlike many field guides, but it won't actually be much help out in the field. There just aren't enough birds featured, and there's a high chance the bird you spot won't be in the guide. Using this guide, I misidentified a species of gull (there are only three listed) and was contacted by a researcher from eBird, who told me to get a real field guide. Ouch!
