I do like these, but we got the Grade 4 one, and instead of building on one year after the next, it covers stuff that was already gone over by the edition for two years ago. Basic stuff like Parts of a Map or Latitute/Longitude (what is it?). Plus side is it covers stuff you need to know but never thought to study such as How Airports are Laid out (using O Hare?).

Really good book for do nows. It has 2 questions per day, a map or two, and the kiddos actually learn from this. It has become at least a twice-weekly brain stretcher that motivates my kiddos to want to learn more about deserts, rivers, whatever. We all like this book.

I recommend this book, but it's only because I haven't found anything better yet. Don't plan to pass it out and merrily do your attendance and other morning paperwork while expecting the students to quietly and accurately complete these questions. My students need explanation, and sometimes even a lot of guidance, to accurately complete many of these questions. I usually read the Monday explanation, have a short discussion, then have the students pass out the maps while I display the questions on the board. After all that is when I cautiously do the attendance. Pros: I don't need a ton of paper, and I can use the copies year after year. I make one copy of the map for every pair of students, and project the questions. This saves a lot of paper and encourages students to help one another. I have students pass out and collect the maps daily. On Friday, students submit their work for the week, which they've written in their own paper. I keep the maps in binder clips by the week. I teach the students how to use the binder clips, and it works very well. Cons: I have found that I cannot just pass out the papers and expect the students to understand the content, and often, even the directions, without my help. I think this is due to their lack of experience with using maps, although some of it is academic vocabulary as well. It does help if I go through the explanation and discussion part on Monday before displaying the questions, but that turns this 34;Warm-up34; into a 25-minute lesson. Sometimes what's in the Monday discussion is much more detailed than what the daily questions address. Sometimes the discussion includes information that cannot be found in the student materials, but is necessary for answering the daily questions. I have skipped several questions throughout the book and even one entire week because the information to answer the questions isn't in the student materials.

I have used Daily Geography Practice with my daughter since Kindergarten level and we are just about to start the 6th grade book. We have thoroughly enjoyed this curriculum. Each week you learn about a certain map, then you have 5 days worth of questions about the map. It is normally 2 questions per day. We tend to do half the questions one day and half later in the week. If it is a subject she already knows well, we may do all the questions in one day. It is laid out very well and the maps cover a large variety of subjects, from water ways, road maps and city maps, to hemispheres, projection maps and mountain ranges. The answers are included for each lesson, but they are on the same pages as the lessons. In all, the book has 36 weeks worth of lessons.
